Castello di Miramare

A Study in History, Detail and Craftsmanship

Overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, Castello di Miramare was built between 1856 and 1860 for Archduke Maximilian of Austria and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium.

During our travels through Europe in June, a visit to this remarkable residence offered a wonderful insight into nineteenth-century architecture and decorative craftsmanship.

The interiors are richly layered, with elaborate timber panelling, intricate parquetry, decorative ceilings, beautiful textiles and an extraordinary collection of period furnishings.

Of particular interest was the magnificent library, with its finely detailed cabinetry, coffered ceiling and views across the Adriatic.

Miramare is a reminder of the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship, and how architecture, interiors and their surroundings can come together to create something truly memorable.
